Dampness in walls

Insulating walls from damp is one of the first steps to take. We can observe that moisture settles in the form of droplets caused by condensation. The areas where this effect is most commonly found are cold surfaces: windows, glass, mirrors, and kitchen or bathroom tiles. Damp causes damage both to wall coverings (plaster and mortar) and to paintwork. Damp in the basement, bathroom, or ceiling causes serious aesthetic issues, including mould stains. It is one of the most common and dangerous problems, as once mould dries, it releases spores and mineral salts that remain permanently in the walls. When inhaled, these spores settle in the bronchi and bronchioles, leading to asthma and allergies. Often, these symptoms improve when changing environment, which we tend to attribute to “easier breathing,” but it is actually due to the better air quality in spaces without such damp. In addition, damp does not only form indoors — it can also enter from outside. Small cracks may allow it to filter through (in old or poor-quality windows, gaps beneath doors, etc.), eventually finding a way inside the home and causing varying levels of damage to nearby objects. This type of damp also tends to build up in drawers and wooden wardrobes, as the enclosed spaces and the high hygroscopic nature of wood favour moisture retention. This moisture then transfers to clothing, leading to mould, ruined leather items, and an unbearable musty smell. It may also come from rising damp caused by groundwater present in the soil beneath the building.

How to eliminate damp in the home

Due to the relatively high porosity of materials such as concrete and bricks used in walls and partitions, it is easy for water to seep through and eventually reach the interior of the property. The problem with excessive moisture at home is that it doesn’t appear suddenly, but its effects develop gradually without us noticing. By the time stains appear on walls and clothing, doors swell, paint peels off, or skirting boards become loose… water has already been affecting the internal structure of these elements for quite some time. Attempting to fix it with cosmetic repairs will only hide the damage without addressing the root of the issue, meaning the consequences of damp will only become more severe. More important than aesthetic damage are the health problems caused by damp. People living in such conditions may suffer from illnesses triggered or worsened by excess humidity, not to mention the structural damage to the property, which can vary in severity. Regarding structural damage, there are various types of damp in walls, wardrobes, furniture, clothing, woodwork… that may lead to flaking, permanent stains, or even cracks in walls and false ceilings. The health effects are particularly serious, as high humidity levels create the ideal environment for pathogenic organisms (fungi, viruses, bacteria…) to thrive, which typically occurs when the relative humidity is around 75–80%. The presence of pathogens increases significantly when there is damp in the home, as it contributes to the development of numerous respiratory illnesses (colds, flu, asthma).
